Reading codes - update on 455 code MIL lit up again after just 2 days, so obviously I had not found the trouble. Took the XJ to the independent shop and they found the problem in 30 minutes - the vacuum pump was leaking. Total to repair is $280, parts and labor. Ah, well, at least that problem's solved.
