Jul 27, 2010. #2. D40 is excellent ( I love mine!) -D60 is an update of the D40 with more MPs, but other stuff left out and a slower flash sync speed. The D50 is an update of the D70/D70s, and as such is a bit obsolete. But it does have an advantage in that it can autofocus with ALL of the Nikkor AF lenses, while the D40+60 can only do so
The Competition. There are four other cameras that are close competitors to the Nikon D40: the Canon Rebel XT, the Pentax K100D, the Samsung GX-1S and the Olympus E-500.. I selected these cameras to compare to the Nikon D40 because they are all aimed at the consumer SLR market (vs. the serious amateurs and professionals), and they all fall within the same price range ($500 to $600).

The Nikon D40 holds a score of 28/100, which is relatively low in today’s competitive market. Announced on November 16, 2006, this DSLR camera was released at a price of $400. The camera measures 124 x 94 x 64mm and weighs 522g or 1.15lbs, making it a compact and lightweight option for its time.

It was the company's smallest and lightest DSLR at the time, paring down some of the more advanced features found on the likes of the D80 and the D50, and was the first Nikon DSLR to do away with a built-in AF motor. For $600 you got: A 6MP CCD sensor. 3-point AF Multi-CAM530 sensor. 2.5 fps burst shooting. A 'large' 2.5" 230k-dot LCD. Your exposure will depend upon the lighting in your scene. A good starting place is to set the ISO to 400, aperture to f/5.6. Because you’ll likely want to control the sharpness of the background, set the camera’s mode dial to Aperture Priority. In this mode, you set the Aperture, and the camera selects the corresponding shutter speed. tQ985K1.
