Disable multiple monitors. Update your audio drivers. Run the game in compatibility mode. Don't use third-party programs that force 3D settings in games. Install the game to your default Steam folder on the C: drive. Run a virus / malware scan. Uninstall, remove leftover folders and files manually, then reinstall.
Kill them off to get some new blood. You can also make some tougher captains by suiciding to them a few times to level them up. Some of the should also level up if you pass time at a tower or help them in power struggle missions. Besides that all you can really do is handicap yourself.

Took me 45ish minutes with only 3 captain-beast kills, all 3 of which weren't technically beast kills they were me finding a captain with ranged

The Nemesis System has NO endgame, the main campaign "story" was practically a small placeholder for abilities and skills, but ultimately, the Nemesis System is where the game's true story is at. I've used Total Commander and the plugin Game Archive UnPacker, to extract localization files from the game's archives global.arch05 and hotchunk_Patch.arch05, rename the suffix (for me: en => fr, fr => en) and reimport them into the archives. There's also a rune that gives 33% chance for exploding heads on Wraith Flash/Wraith burn kills, those are the two wraith finishers A+X and X+Y. Wraith Blast is your standard stun that does some damage, so when that little damage manages to kill an enemy, their heads will explode with your rune. Head explosions also have a chance of scaring
They will tell you which skill (s) you need to unlock them. For some of them, the skill is only needed for the optional objective, but they still require the skill before you can attempt the mission. Yea I got my sword and bow, but the very last dagger mission is giving me a lot of problems.
